Burness Paull Claims Crown At Global Intellectual Property Awards

Burness Paull LLP underlined its market-leading credentials in Intellectual Property after it was named the best in Scotland at a global awards ceremony.

The 14th Annual Managing IP Awards, held at the The Savoy Hotel, London (March 8th 2018), saw Burness Paull win the United Kingdom (Scotland) Contentious Firm of the Year category for the first time.

The firm’s contentious IP practice, led by Colin Hulme, is the busiest in Scotland. In each of the last three years it has acted in more than 70% of all actions raised in the Scottish Intellectual Property Court, which includes securing wins in the most significant patent and trade mark cases heard in Scotland last year.

“Securing this prestigious accolade has been a long term goal for the practice,” explained Colin Hulme.

“It is recognition of the tremendous progress made by the team not just in the last year, but in recent years.  Our ambitious objective is to be recognised as the leading IP practice in Scotland and this award is an important step on the way to achieving that.”

The firm has acted to protect the brands of famous names such as Harris Tweed and Sky Sports. The protection of confidential information and trade secrets is also an important element of its work, especially for clients in the ultra-competitive Oil & Gas sector.

“The team have the privilege of working with some of the best Scottish and Global clients and, of course, this award could not have been secured without their continued support and trust in us. We have ambitious plans to continue to add to our client roster and to our team, and winning this award will help us do so.”

Burness Paull is one of only two Scottish member firms in the UK Intellectual Property Lawyers’ Association, which lobbies for improvements to the law, and the practice of IP law.

The award is the latest in a series of IP accolades for the firm - which recently achieved top ranking in all four major IP law directories (Chambers UK, Legal 500, World Trade Mark Review and IP Stars).
