Burness Paull has reported its results for the financial year ending 31 July 2023.
During this period, the firm continued to invest in support of its long-term strategic plan to strengthen and extend services, to deliver exceptional client outcomes, and to ensure employees are competitively remunerated against a backdrop of inflation.
Annual turnover was up six per cent to £83.2m (2021/2022: £78.6m) and profit was £35.5m (2021/2022: £35.7m).
Revenue continued to be underpinned by Burness Paull’s strengths in corporate finance, real estate, banking & funds, dispute resolution and employment.
The firm is also seeing benefits from its diversification strategy, with newer and recently strengthened teams across technology, restructuring & insolvency, public law, financial services regulation, cyber & data security, family, private client, and immigration; delivering double-digit percentage increases in fee income.
Notable client activity for the year included advising:
- life and pensions consolidator Chesnara plc on the acquisition of 47,000 life insurance and critical illness policies from Canada Life.
- Brockwell Energy with project development and Scots law aspects of the financing of the £300m 220MW North Kyle onshore wind farm.
- Cairngorm Capital on the financing of Verso Group and the acquisition of multiple wealth management businesses.
- Maven Capital and other shareholders on the sale of Blacktrace, a developer of scientific instrumentation, to Unchained Labs.
- housebuilders on the sale of more than 2,000 homes in Scotland with a combined value of over £650m, and on deals for the delivery of thousands more in the private market and social housing sectors; and
- on disputes and litigation with a combined value in excess of £1bn.
The firm has continued to invest in its people, technology and facilities during 2022/23. In a year that saw five lateral partner hires, including Mark Kirke as the new head of the construction and projects division, there were also moves to state-of-the-art offices in Glasgow and Aberdeen. These offices are significantly more sustainable and will support Burness Paull’s commitment to achieve net zero by 2050.
There have also been four internal partner promotions effective from the start of the new financial year (1 August 2023) as the firm continues to develop homegrown talent alongside the lateral hires and recognises growing expertise and commitment to client service.
The number of partners at Burness Paull now stands at 89 and total headcount across its offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen is more than 670.
Improving diversity and inclusion within the firm’s own ranks and wider legal profession continues to be a central policy theme. Building on existing initiatives across LGBT+, race, social and gender equality, the firm this year partnered with leading neurodiversity charity Salvesen Mindroom Centre and signed up to the Neuroinclusion at Work programme, the first project of its kind in Scotland.
Community links were also maintained through the work of the Burness Paull Foundation, including the longstanding partnership with Street Soccer Scotland that saw support for Team Scotland at July’s Homeless World Cup held in Sacramento.
